Fluvanna SPCA Breaches 1,675 SSNs Online

TROY, Virginia. The Fluvanna SPCA has accidentally breached the names, addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers of 1,675 people online. In all, nearly 6,000 individuals who adopted a pet from the Fluvanna SPCA prior to 2007, owned a pet which stayed at the SPCA, or found a stray may have had their name, address, phone number and other personal information exposed online. more...
University of Hawaii Manoa Breaches 40,101 Alumni SSNs

HONOLULU, Hawaii. The University of Hawaii-Manoa and has breached the personal information of 40,101 students who attended between 1990-1998 and 2001 and West Oahu in the fall of 1994, or who graduated between 1988-1993. The information included names, social security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, demographic, and detailed academic performance data. These UH students are at increased risk of identity theft and fraud. The information was posted on an insecure, unencrypted University of Hawaii-West Oahu (UHWO) website for almost a year. This latest breach follows on the heels of a May, 2010 breach involving 53,000 students, and a 2009 breach involving 15,487 parents and students. Mississippi 155th Heavy Brigade Combat Team Puts 2,672 Troops at Risk of ID Theft

JACKSON, Mississippi. The Mississippi National Guard has breached 3,323 personnel records online of active-duty Mississippi National Guardsmen and women of the 155th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, who returned from deployment in Iraq last year. The breached files contain 2,674 unique names and 2,672 social security numbers. The breach occurred on or before September 10, 2010 at the Mississippi National Guard's website until they were discovered in early October, 2010 by the Liberty Coalition. During that time, the files were potentially available to anyone in the world with an internet connection. Within minutes after the Liberty Coalition notified the Mississippi National Guard of the breach, access to the site was restricted and the 155th was notified of the breach. more...
Corona-Norco Unified School District Posts 81 Teacher SSNs Online

An unknown Corona-Norco Unified School District employee accidentally posted the names, social security numbers, and teaching certifications for 83 Corona-Norco Unified School District teachers on the school district's website. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Michael Lin said that the personal information was in an internal report and was never supposed to go online. The file was potentially available to anyone with an internet connection "for less than one year," according to Lin. The file was not encrypted and not password-protected. At least one search engine discovered and copied the file. Mr. Lin also indicated that the district is conducting an internal investigation of the event. more...

An employee of the Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR) posted 2,890 names, social security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and other personal information of Baltimore County residents on his company's website for more than two months. Between April 27, 2010 and July 14, 2010 the sensitive personal information was potentially available to anyone in the world with an internet connection. Website Posts Personal Information for Phishing Victims

The website posted personal information for 70 individuals who appear to be victims of a phishing website. Phishing is when someone creates a website that appears to be legitimate (such as a bank website) in order to trick people into divulging personal information. Unfortunately, the Liberty Coalition was unable to contact or determine contact information for before it was taken offline. Dekalb School District Posts 397 Employees' Insurance Info, SSNs Online

On November 29, 2007 the Dekalb County Schools Human Resource Department uploaded nine files to the website,, which included change of address and resignations forms, and also a file named "INVOICE.xls." This file contained the names and employment information of 397 current and former Dekalb County Schools employees, including 135 social security numbers. more...

In August 2003, several files used to prepare the 2003-2004 East Burke High School Student Directory were placed on the school's website, and forgotten for more than five years. One of those files contained sensitive employee information including names, social security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, job titles, e-mail addresses, and a few unlisted phone numbers. University of Houston Math Prof Posts 259 SSNs Online

HOUSTON, Texas. University of Houston Math professor, Marjorie Marks, accidentally posted 259 students' social security numbers and grades on a UH Math web server in October, 2005. The Liberty Coalition notified the university of the breach in late May, 2008, but search engine caches did not clear until July, 2008. REDWOOD CITY, California. For almost a year, at least one identity thief used to traffic stolen personal information for 53 people. The information included credit card numbers, addresses, mothers' maiden names, social security numbers, drivers license numbers, bank accounts, paypal account information, and a wide range of other sensitive personal information. The user, "linux3r" (whose account has been suspended) proudly declared, "Selling: Credit cards, Paypals, Banks Logins, etc Ask me..." Virginia Tech Profs Post 128 SSNs Online

BLACKSBURG, Virginia. In a breach of personal student information almost identical to the one reported in September 2007, professors "erclark1" and "shugart" posted personal information for 250 students on Virginia Tech servers, including 128 social security numbers and 111 partial social security numbers. The files were discovered and deleted in December 2007, but the Liberty Coalition waited several months before announcing the breach, to make sure search engine caches cleared. The breached files were created in September 2000 and Spring of 1998, and could not have been posted before that time. more...

California and Texas. More than 12,000 Z-Car enthusiasts have had their names, addresses, e-mail addresses, and other contact information exposed online. An user, "~aktar" placed a backed-up copy of a SQL database of Internet Z-Car Club Members, which was picked up by search engines.
